Having now watched rather a lot of Legend of the Seeker, I have noticed that all the character who are good or at least rootable-for have long, loose hair. Richard, Kahlan and Zed are the heroes, and they all have long hair that blows dramatically at certain moments. Lord Rahl (the main villain) also has long hair but once he starts getting character development, he's a) pretty awesome, and b) quite decent by the standards of evil overlords, taking care to personally communicate with the families of his dead soldiers, and being pretty kind to somebody he could have tortured to get information.
In contrast, the majority of the enemy minions have cropped hair, with the exception of one surprisingly decent captain, who has longer hair (but not as long as the heroes) The Mord-Sith (the creepy, apparently bisexual dominatrix people) also have tightly plaited hair, but one of the them (who gets mind-controlled to be a temporary not-villain) starts to have her hair plait fall apart, and in the two scenes where you are supposed to feel a something about her other than mild distaste, she doesn't have a plait. And the Mord-Sith who changes sides to the good guys has a plait when she's a bad guy, a looser style when she's not an enemy but not a hero, and when she changes sides proper, has her hair completely loose.
In short: "short hair makes you evil"
And yes, it has just occurred to me how weird it is that I have come up with a theory about people's hair.
The fact that is both the actresses who play the two Mord-Sith who get any kind of character development (and by extension, straight hair) are both pretty hot, as is Kahlan's, so I'm not necessarily complaining. I just think that overly tight leather and plaited hair are less flattering for most women than loose hair and clothes that they can actually move in.
